Another Vegan Blog

Another Vegan Blog!

I know, I know... Another vegan blog - the world doesn't seem to have a shortage of these, especially in the student world; you know, because we are just so liberal, finding ourselves and experimenting with what we feel should be the truths of the universe and what not. These damn centennials with their flat-whites, denim jackets, air-max and Instagram feeds full of plants - oh and yes, my boyfriend is growing a man-bun. I agree, we are sheep, but in this particular subject I am somewhat grateful for the growing number of sheeples in this generation.

Veganism has been one of my most eye-opening journeys, I've learnt more about myself (and my apathy) in the past 7 months than I really have in 21 years. See, once you get into it - veganism is definitely not about gluten-free pizza bases and kale smoothies. It's not even about making a sacrifice because I want to be a better human (because that looks good, right?); it's simply about being humane.

I learnt more about where we get our meat from, our eggs, our honey and milk - the more I learnt, the harder it became to consume things that simply weren't mine to consume. Don't get me wrong - I don't believe meat is not for humans, I am a Christian and I do believe that much of what was put on this earth was originally a gift for us to enjoy . I do, however, believe that mass-industry animal by-products have re-defined this gift, have cut off it's legs & gagged it and that is just not okay. I don't really believe people can plead ignorance either, in this age of technology - maybe just apathy.

I understand though, changing to veganism just seems so... scary (inconvenient) right? Is it even safe? You'd have to cut out those middle two segments in your healthy, balanced food-pyramid diet; you know, that one that only has your best interests at heart - I mean it has to be right, it's approved by the... well you tell me? Apart from messing up your health, veganism is super heavy on the wallet - simply not a sustainable way of living. Ha! Don't be offended, this was definitely me about 8 months ago, especially as a broke student in the faculty of Health Sciences.

Fortunately though, I kept an open-mind through countless articles and extremely bias short-films - right up until I could no longer pretend that supporting these industries was okay so I just committed. I still faced one problem though - "broke student". So I've spent the last few months figuring out how to eat ethically without falling into stripper-hood - and to be honest it got a whole lot easier when I acquired a very money-wise, plans-everything boyfriend who decided he'd like to save the planet too. This wasn't a very easy task in the beginning, but now we have figured out some flippen fantastic recipes that haven't forced us to get credit cards.

This is the point of this blog - to share some of the recipes we use and maybe make it a little easier on your budget and lack-of-time (we see you). Even if you're just reducing a little, every chicken not consumed is a total win in my eyes!

We've added a pretty good estimate of how much each recipe costs and how much they serve. Majority of the recipes we can spread over two or three meals - wild.

Be blessed fren
